About Skip Frye

Skip Frye is a longstanding figure in San Diego surf culture, known for a smooth, flowing style and a design approach that prioritizes function over form. He developed this single fin template in the mid-1970s to complement two of his signature shapes, the Egg and the Glider. The fin was built to support — not dominate — the board, which is why the outline stays understated: minimal rake, clean curves, and no unnecessary bulk.

Volan Construction and Flex

Each fin is built at the True Ames factory in Santa Barbara, CA, using Volan fiberglass panels that are hand-laid and hand-templated for consistent weave orientation and strength. Precision foiling and a body-driven flex pattern — rather than flex concentrated at the tip — are what set these apart. That flex distribution is designed to carry speed and projection through bottom turns and off the top, and every fin goes through their standard quality control process.
